4,4′-Biphenol is synthesised by dealkylation of the tetra-t-butyl derivative, generated by the oxidative coupling of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol.

In a three-necked flask 50 grams [OF 2, 2', 6, 6'-TETRA-T-BUTYL-4, 4'-BIPHENOL (N] and 0.25 gm of [METHANESULFONIC] acid were mixed with a mixture of 80 ml Isopar-G (hydrocarbons [C10-C11)] and 20 ml of toluene. After 2 hours at [150°C,] 26 grams of isobutylene is collected in a dry ice trap and the reaction cooled to room temperature and was filtered. The biphenol was dried at [130°C,] giving 22.5 gram of 4, 4'-biphenol (99% yield) with purity >99% were collected.
