Calcium stearate synthesis
- Product Name:Calcium stearate
- CAS Number:1592-23-0
- Molecular formula:C36H70CaO4
- Molecular Weight:607.02
2C17H35COOH + CaO→(C17H35COO)2Ca + H2O
It is also the main component of soap scum, a white solid that forms when soap is mixed with hard water. Unlike soaps containing sodium and potassium, calcium stearate is insoluble in water and does not lather well . Commercially it is sold as a 50 % dispersion in water or as a spray dried powder. As a food additive it is known by the generic E number E470. .

Example 22The experiment described in Example 21 was repeated using 0.5 molar equivalents stearic acid as opposed to 0.5 molar equivalents palmitic acid.Similar observations were made in this experiment and a white powder (576g) with a pleasant smell was produced. The white powdery product was separated by particle size into 3 fractions, i.e. Fraction 1 , a free-flowing white powder (207g) with particle size <1 mm, Fraction 2, free-flowing white granules (152 g) with particle size 1-2.36 mm and Fraction 3 with particle size >2.36 mm Analysis (Fraction 1 )Glycerol: 47.0 % (w/w) - Method: HPLCCalcium: 6.90 % (w/w) - Method: Alkaline Metals in Foodstuffs by AAS (TM200) Water: 7.40 % (w/w) - Method: Karl Fischer (TM 166) pH (1% suspension in distilled water): 13.2 - Method: TM41X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) of Fraction 1 powder has shown that the solid phase consisted of calcium stearate hydrate and calcium carbonate. An unidentified reflection at 10.2° in 2Θ indicated there were possibly traces of calcium monoglyceroxide present. None of the other glyceroxides were detected.
