Clear colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. | [Reactivity Profile]
P-CHLOROBENZOTRIFLUORIDE(98-56-6) is sensitive to heat and light. This chemical reacts vigorously with oxidizing materials such as permanganates and dichromates. P-CHLOROBENZOTRIFLUORIDE(98-56-6) is incompatible with strong bases. P-CHLOROBENZOTRIFLUORIDE(98-56-6) is also incompatible with sodium dimethyl sulfonate. | [Air & Water Reactions]
Highly flammable. Insoluble in water. | [Potential Exposure]
This material is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals; dyes, dielectrics, and insecticides. | [Fire Hazard]
This chemical is combustible. | [First aid]
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any
contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least
15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seekmedical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts the
skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately
with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately.
If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure,
begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if
heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical
facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce
vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.

UN2234 Chlorobenzotrifluorides, Hazard Class:
3; Labels: 3-Flammable liquid. | [Incompatibilities]
Vapors may form explosive mixture with
air. Violent reaction with strong oxidizers, such as permanganates and dichromates, chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.; contact may
cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides. Mixture
with sodium dimethyl 5-sulphonatoisophthalate (3965-55-7)
may cause explosion. | [Chemical Properties]
Chlorobenzotrifluoride is a colorless, highly
flammable liquid. | [Waste Disposal]
In accordance with
40CFR165 recommendations for the disposal of pesticides
and pesticide containers. Must be disposed properly by following package label directions or by contacting your local
or federal environmental control agency, or by contacting
your regional EPA office. | [Uses]
A benzene derivative; displays mutagenic and toxic activity. | [Uses]
Chemical intermediate for dinitroaniline herbicides, dyes. As dielectric fluid and as solvent. | [storage]
Color Code—Red: Flammability Hazard: Store ina flammable liquid storage area or approved cabinet awayfrom ignition sources and corrosive and reactive materials.Prior to working with chlorobenzotrifluoride you should betrained on its proper handling and storage. Store in tightlyclosed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away fromoxidizers. Metal containers involving the transfer of thischemical should be grounded and bonded. Drums must beequipped with self-closing valves, pressure vacuum bungs, and flame arresters. Use only nonsparking tools and equipment, especially when opening and closing containers ofthis chemical. Sources of ignition, such as smoking andopen flames, are prohibited where this chemical is used, handled, or stored in a manner that could create a potentialfire or explosion hazard. | [Purification Methods]
Purify it as for o-chlorobenzotrifluoride above. [Beilstein 5 IV 815.] |
Questions And Answer | Back Directory | [Description]
4-Chlorobenzotrifluoride acts as an important intermediate for dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, insecticides and herbicides. It is widely used in various applications including adhesives, pigments, sealant chemicals, paints and coatings as well as being used as an active component of polyurethane finishes. It is also used as an environmental friendly solvent for cleaning or degreasing and dielectric fluid. Because of its high capacity to dissolve inks, it is also used in the printing industry. Finally, it also finds applications in xylene replacement in cleaners, thinners and other aromatic hydrocarbon blends1. Other applications for PCBTF include resins, epoxy resins, diluents, graffiti removers, and various other solvent applications.
