Steps:
Preparation of L-tryptophan methyl ester 2
At 0 °C, to a solution of 4 g (20 mmol) L-tryptophan in methanol (20 mL), 4.5 mL thionyl chloride was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred for 10 min and then was refluxed for 16 h. Solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was made basic with 50 mL saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate, and the aqueous mixture extracted with ethyl acetate (3 × 50 mL). The organic phase was washed with water, then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated. The product was obtained in 80% yield.
