A mixture of 400 mg of methyl 5-aminobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylate, 56 mg of lithium hydroxide monohydrate,5 ml of water, and 15 ml of methanol was stirred for 2 hours at 80°C. After being cooled to room temperature, thereaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. Water was added to the residues, and the residue waswashed three times with tert-butyl methyl ether. One (1) M hydrochloric acid was added to the aqueous layer to adjustpH thereof to 5 to 6. The precipitated solids were collected by filtration. The obtained solids were washed with waterand ethyl acetate and then dried under reduced pressure, thereby obtaining 280 mg of 5-aminobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (hereinafter, described as a "compound 61 of the present invention") 1H-NMR (DMSO-D6) δ: 7.82 (s, 1H), 7.63 (d, 1H, J = 8.8 Hz), 7.03 (d, 1H, J = 2.2 Hz), 6.86 (dd, 1H, J = 8.8, 2.2 Hz).
