To a stirred solution of biphenyl (15.4 g, 100 mmol) and anhydrous ferric chloride (80 mg) in dichlorometfaaiie (100ml) at room temperature was added slowly tert-butyl chloride (23.2 .ml, 21(5 mmol). The reaction was stirred overnight. The product was washed with water and extracted with hexane (100 ml) 3 times. The combined organic phase was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo and gave 26.6 g of Compound S (yield 100%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, chloroform-d): δ, ppm 7.542 (d, 4 H), 7.444 (d, 4 H), 1.365 (s, 18 H).
