[00389] Step 2: A suspension of (2)-4-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-2-methyloxazol-5(4H)- one (2.00 g, 9.75 mmol) in 3 N HC1 (60 mL) was heated to reflux. The reaction was allowed to cool to room temperature and then was cooled in an ice bath with stirring. The solid was isolated by filtration and rinsing with water followed by drying under high vacuum to provide 3-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-oxopropanoic acid (1.56 g, 86% yield) as a solid.
