Step 1: 1-(3-nitro-4-(piperidin-1-yl)phenyl)ethanone: Piperidine (539 μl, 5.46 mmol) was added to a solution of 1-(4-fluoro-3-nitrophenyl)ethanone (1 g, 5.46 mmol) and Et3N (2.28 ml, 16.4 mmol) in MeCN (10 ml) and the resultant solution was stirred at RT overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound (1.2 g, 4.64 mmol, 85% yield, 96% purity) as a red oil. UPLC-MS (Method 1) m/z 249.3 (M+H)+ at 1.48 min.
