丙酮醛為黃色流動(dòng)液體。有辛辣氣味、吸濕性。極易聚合為黏稠性半固體，溶于水，放出熱量，又恢復(fù)為單體溶液。加熱形成黃綠色氣體，在封閉管中能維持?jǐn)?shù)天。商品一般為20%～40%水溶液。對石蕊試紙略顯酸性。甲基乙二醛是一種高活性化合物并具有細(xì)胞毒性。早在1958年，人們發(fā)現(xiàn)丙酮醛不僅具有抗瘧疾、抗病毒的作用而且有抗腫瘤的效應(yīng)，隨后人們從體外、體內(nèi)實(shí)驗(yàn)以及臨床患論證了甲基乙二醛的抗腫瘤作用。
