Tetrabutylammonium fluoride or simply: TBAF is a quaternary ammonium salt with the formula CH3CH2CH2CH2 4N+F-. The trihydrate of this compound or its tetrahydrofuran solution is a commercially available reagent. In the laboratory, tetrahydrofuran solution forms of tetrabutylammonium fluoride are often used for organic soluble fluoride ions, which can be used to remove silane protective groups. It can also be used as a phase transfer catalyst and as a mild base. By heating, the compound can also undergo n-alkylation of acylamides. Since the fluorine atom is a strong hydrogen bond acceptor, it is nearly impossible to obtain a completely dry sample of the compound. When it is heated to 77 °C under vacuum, the compound will decompose into hydrogen fluoride salt, and when the sample is dried at 40 °C under high vacuum, it will still obtain 10-30mol% water content and 10% difluoride salt.
