Beschreibung
This alkaloid from Senecio Jacobea was originally given the empirical formula
ClsH2S0sN by Barger and Blackie but has since been shown to exist as the
chlorine-containing compound. It has[α]
D + 52.5° (CHCl3 ) and on hydrolysis
yields retronecine and jaconecic acid, ClOH160 6, m.p. l83-4°C; [α]
25D + 28.1 °
(EtOH). In this reaction, the chlorine is also lost by hydrolysis. The base forms a
dihydrochloride, m.p. 204-5°C (dec.).
