29051990 | [Safety Profile]
Moderately toxic by
ingestion and sktn contact. A skin and
severe eye irritant. Flammable liquid when
exposed to heat or flame; can react with
oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use dry
chemical, CO2, foam, fog. When heated to
decomposition it emits acrid smoke and
irritating fumes. See also ALCOHOLS. | [Hazardous Substances Data]

Hazard Information | Back Directory | [General Description]
Flash point of 137°F. Less dense than water and slightly soluble in water. Vapors are heavier than air. Used as a solvent and in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. | [Reactivity Profile]
Flammable and/or toxic gases are generated by the combination of alcohols, such as 2-ETHYLBUTANOL(97-95-0), with alkali metals, nitrides, and strong reducing agents. Alcohols react with oxoacids and carboxylic acids to form esters plus water. Oxidizing agents convert them to aldehydes or ketones. Alcohols exhibit both weak acid and weak base behavior. They may initiate the polymerization of isocyanates and epoxides. | [Air & Water Reactions]
Flammable. Slightly soluble in water. | [Hazard]
Moderate fire risk. | [Health Hazard]
Liquid causes eye burns. Vapors may be mildly irritating to nose and throat. | [Potential Exposure]
Used as a solvent; for making dyes,
perfumes, flavorings, and drugs | [Fire Hazard]
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water. | [First aid]
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any
contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least
15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek
medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts the
skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately
with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately.
If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure,
begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if
heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical
facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce
vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. | [Shipping]

Ethylbutanol is a colorless liquid with a mild,
alcoholic odor. | [Waste Disposal]
Incineration by spraying or in
paper packaging. Flammable solvent may be added. | [Production Methods]
2-Ethylbutanol can be prepared commercially by the aldol
condensation of acetaldehyde and 1-butanal and subsequent
hydrogenation. | [storage]
Color Code—Red: Flammability Hazard: Store ina flammable liquid storage area or approved cabinet awayfrom ignition sources and corrosive and reactive materials.Prior to working with this chemical you should be trainedon its proper handling and storage. Store in tightly closedcontainers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from oxidizers, strong acids, strong bases, reducing agents, heat, andsources of ignition. Where possible, automatically pumpliquid from drums or other storage containers to processcontainers. | [Purification Methods]
Dry it with CaSO4 for several days, filter and fractionally distil it. [Beilstein 1 IV 1725.] |
