Hazard Information | Back Directory | [General Description]
Yellow powder. | [Reactivity Profile]
Aromatic nitro compounds, such as 5-NITROACENAPHTHENE(602-87-9), range from slight to strong oxidizing agents. If mixed with reducing agents, including hydrides, sulfides and nitrides, they may begin a vigorous reaction that culminates in a detonation. The aromatic nitro compounds may explode in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide even in the presence of water or organic solvents. The explosive tendencies of aromatic nitro compounds are increased by the presence of multiple nitro groups. | [Air & Water Reactions]
Insoluble in water. | [Health Hazard]
ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: There is clear evidence that this compound is an animal carcinogen. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx. | [Potential Exposure]
Used in organic synthesis. | [Fire Hazard]
Flash point data for this chemical are not available. 5-NITROACENAPHTHENE is probably combustible. | [First aid]
Skin Contact: Flood all areas of body that have
contacted the substance with water. Don’t wait to remove
contaminated clothing; do it under the water stream. Use
soap to help assure removal. Isolate contaminated clothing
when removed to prevent contact by others. Eye
Contact: Remove any contact lenses at once. Flush eyes
well with copious quantities of water or normal saline for
at least 20 30 minutes. Seek medical attention. Inhalation:
Leave contaminated area immediately; breathe fresh air.
Proper respiratory protection must be supplied to any rescuers.
If coughing, difficult breathing or any other symptoms
develop, seek medical attention at once, even if
symptoms develop many hours after exposure. Ingestion: If
convulsions are not present, give a glass or two of water or
milk to dilute the substance. Assure that the person’s airway
is unobstructed and contact a hospital or poison center
immediately for advice on whether or not to induce
vomiting. | [Shipping]

Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials, Technical
Name Required. | [Incompatibilities]
5-Nitroacenaphthene is an aromatic
hydrocarbon (nitro compound). It may be flammable or
explosive. Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates,
peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine,
fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep
away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides; alkalis may increases the thermal sensitivity
of this chemical. | [Chemical Properties]
5-Nitroacenaphthene is a yellow crystalline
solid. | [Chemical Properties]
yellow powder | [Waste Disposal]
Careful incineration in an
incinerator equipped with afterburner and scrubbers. | [Uses]
5-Nitroacenaphthene is a derivative of acenaphthene, a polycyclic hydrocarbon that has potential to act as polyploidizing agents in plants. | [Definition]
ChEBI: 5-Nitroacenaphthene is a nitronaphthalene. |
