Steps:

Synthesis of isobutyl magnesium bromide (3)
292 mg of magnesium (12 mmol) were introduced into a dry, 2-necked, round bottom flask together with a small iodine crystal. One of the necks was fitted with a condenser and the system was kept under argon cooled in an ice bath. 6 mL of dry diethyl ether were added to the reaction flask, after which a solution of isobutyl bromide (0.87 mL, 8 mmol) in 6 mL of diethyl ether was slowly added. The reaction mixture was kept at rt for 30 min and then maintained under reflux for 15 min. After this time, the reaction flask was cooled to room temperature and its contents transferred via cannula to the next reaction.
