2. General Reaction Procedure for the Preparation of Dialkyl Phosphites1
General procedure: Metallicsodium (0.2 g, 0.0087 mol) was dissolved in 0.3 mol of corresponding alcohol(22.2 g of butyl alcohol, 22.2 g of isobutyl alcohol,or 34.8 g of heptyl alcohol), then diethylphosphite was added (13.8 g, 0.1 mol). The mixture was heatedfor nearly 3 h in an oil bath with starting temperature 155 oC in a100-mL round-bottomed flask equipped with a 10-cm fractional distillation headuntil ethanol was completely distilled. The bath temperature was graduallyincreased during the reaction to 190 oC to achieve permanent removalof ethanol from the reaction mixture. Fractional distillation of the residualliquid in a short pathdistillation apparatus under reduced pressure afforded dialkyl phosphite ascolorless liquid. The physical constants of the prepared dialkyl phosphites arein agreement with the literature.8
