General procedure: The corresponding α-formylarylacetate derivative (14mmol) wasdissolved in anhydrous ethanol or methanol (40mL).The reaction mixture was cooled to -10 °C, then NaBH4(18mmol) was added to the mixture in batches. The reaction was carried out at the same temperaturefor 9-17 h, and monitored by TLC. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removedin vacuo. Water (40mL) was added to the residue and extracted with methylenechloride (3×50mL). This extractwas washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent wasremoved by rotary evaporation under reduced pressure to give oil, which waspurified by column chromatography with ethyl acetate in petroleum ether.
