General procedure for preparation 5-nitrobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride derivatives(13a and 13b)

A solution of 12a (21 mmol) in thionyl chloride (210 mmol)was refluxed for 24 h. The mixture was cooled to roomtemperature, diluted with toluene (50 mL) and concentrated to20mL. This process was repeated two additional times beforethe contents were concentrated to near dryness. Compoundnitrobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride (13a) wasdirectly used in the next step without further purification.Methyl-5-nitrobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride (13b)was synthesized following the same procedure. Nitrobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride (13a).Time = 24 h Yield: 90%., m.p. 159-161 °C; lit.159-160 °C.(Pessoa Mahana et al. 2008) IR (KBr, cm-1): 3100,1740, 1518.
