To the solution of 3-methyl-1,2-phenylenediamine (0.2 g, 1.64 mmol) in 7 mL dilute acetic acid (0.5%), (0.3 g, 2.46 mmol) of sodium nitrite in 5 mL of water was added drop-wise at 0-4° C. After addition, the reaction mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 4 h. The reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and dried over sodium sulfate and was concentrated under vacuum. The product was obtained as orange-brown solid (0.17 g, 76%). m.p. 145-146° C. ¹H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl₃, TMS) δ 12.2 (s, 1H), 8.12 (d, 1H), 7.95 (d, 1H), 7.42 (t, 1H), 2.1 (s, 3H).
