Reaction Conditions:

Steps:
1; 19.1 Step 1: 2-(4-(benzyloxy)-1H-indol-3-yl)-N,N-dimethyl-2-oxoacetamide
To a solution of 4-(benzyloxy)-1H-indole (5.0 g, 22.4 mmol) in ether (100 ml_) under ice- salt water bath cooling was added dropwise a solution of oxalyl chloride (5.80 g, 45.7 mmol) in ether (45 ml_) under nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting brown suspension was stirred for 3 h, then added dropwise into 40% aq. dimethylamine (50 ml_) under ice-salt water bath cooling. The resulting suspension was stirred overnight at room temperature. The suspension was filtered, and the filter cake was rinsed with water. The filter cake was dried under reduced pressure, and then slurried in hexane (50 ml_). After stirrring at room temperature for 1 h, the slurry was filtered to afford the title product as an orange solid (3.81 g, 52%).
