Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 2-Adamantanone;methylmagnesium chloride in tetrahydrofuran at 0; for 0.5 h;
Stage #2: with ammonium chloride in tetrahydrofuran;

Steps:

3M Methylmagnesium chloride in THF (44 mL), was added through a canula to adamantan-2-one(10 g, 66.66 mmol) in THF (50 mL) at 0 °C. After stirring at 0 °C for 0.5 h, the reaction mixture was quenched by adding saturated NH₄C1 solution. The organic layer was separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layer was washed with water and brine, dried over Na₂S0₄ and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to afford 2-methyladamantan-2-ol (11 g, 99% yield) as an off-white solid.
