Steps:

2 4.2.1.1. General procedure 1: synthesis of linear anilides 21a-f.
General procedure: The cyclic ketone (1 equiv) was added to a solution of magnesium methyl carbonate (2 M in DMF, 8 equiv). The reaction mixture was stirred at 130 °C for 6 h. After cooling to rt, 10% HCl solution was added until the pH became acidic. The aqueous phase was extracted with Et₂O, and the combined organic layers washed with H₂O and sat. brine, dried over MgSO₄, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give the carboxylic acid.
