Step 2; 760 mg (3 mmol) of 2-bromomethylpyridine.HBr and 436 mg (3.15 mmol) of potassium carbonate were degassed under vacuum for 1 hour. 10 ml_ of dry acetone were added and the mixture was stirred under argon for 6 hours at room temperature (about 25 0C). The solvent was removed and the 2-bromomethylpyhdine was extracted with 3 x 10 ml_ of diethyl ether under inert atmosphere. The solvent was removed to afford a pink oil with quantitative yield.
