(2-Bromoethyl)benzene synthesis
- Product Name:(2-Bromoethyl)benzene
- CAS Number:103-63-9
- Molecular formula:C8H9Br
- Molecular Weight:185.06
Reaction: The phenethyl alcohol was heated to 110°C, hydrogen bromide was slowly introduced, and the reaction was refluxed. The reaction was completed, cooled, washed with water, 10% sodium carbonate solution, and water in turn. After drying with anhydrous potassium carbonate, fractional distillation under reduced pressure was carried out to collect fractions at 97-99°C (2.0 kPa) with a yield of over 90%.

Reaction Conditions:
with 1,2-dibromo-1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane;triphenylphosphine in dichloromethane at 20; for 0.15 h;Appel Halogenation;
Steps:
3.3. General procedure for conversion to bromide
General procedure: PPh3 (2.2 mmol) was dissolved in freshly distilled dichloromethane (4.0 mL) at 20 °C. A solution of DBTCE (2.2 mmol) in freshly distilled dichloromethane (4.0 mL) was added to the solution dropwise and the white colloidal mixture was stirred for 2 min. A solution of alcohol (2.0 mmol) or cyclic ether (1.0 mmol) in freshly distilled dichloromethane (4.0 mL) was added to the mixture dropwise over 2 min and during adding the reaction mixture became a colorless solution. The resulting solution was stirred for 5 min and the mixture was purified by flash column on 20 g of silica gel using petroleum ether or a mixture of petroleum ether/EtOAc (1:1).
