General procedure for Si-AlClx catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation:
General procedure: Anhydrous benzene (1.00 mL, 11.2 mmol) was added to a heterogenous mixture of Si-AlClx (0.611 g, 1.02 mmol [loading: 1.67 mmol/g]) in anhydrous CH2Cl2 (10 mL) in a 50 mL PTFE lined glass reactor, followed by slow addition of 2-bromobutane (1.11 mL, 10.2 mmol). The glass reactor was capped with a plastic releasing valve top and irradiated in a Milestone START Microwave at 750 W with a ramp to 140 °C over 2 min, and then maintained for an additional 3 min. The flask was cooled, underwent vacuum filtration, washed with a solution of 2% CH3OH in EtOAc, and the combined filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. Column chromatography (hexanes) afforded a sec-butylbenzene (1.26 g, 92%) as clear colorless liquid.
