1-Bromooctadecane is synthesized by the reaction of stearyl alcohol with hydrogen bromide. The alcohol is heated to 100°C, dry hydrogen bromide is introduced, and the reaction temperature is maintained at 100-120°C until the solution no longer absorbs hydrogen bromide. N-palmitoyl-(L)-cysteine is reacted in an analogous manner with 1-bromo-octadecane and N-palmitoyl-S-octadecyl-(L)-cysteine of melting point 90°-92° is thus obtained; [α]D20 =+13° (c=1.33 chloroform).
