(RS) tert-butyl 4-benzyl-2-methyl-piperazine-l-carboxylateA solution of di-tert-butyl-dicarbonate (3.03g, 13.89 mmol) in DCM (9 ml) was added to a solution of (RS) l-benzyl-3-methyl-piperazine (2.36g, 12.4 mmol) in DCM (32 ml) and the resulting solution was stirred overnight at ambient temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was then partitioned between DCM (30 ml) and saturated NaHCO3 soln. (30 ml); the layers were separated and the aqueous layer washed further with DCM (3 x 20 ml). The organic extracts were combined, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo to give an oil which was purified by flash column chromatography on silica, eluting with a mixture of isohexane and EtOAc (3:1 v/v) to give the title compound as a colourless oil, 3.41g, 95%,.H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.24 (d, 3H), 1.45 (s, 9H), 2.00 (m, IH), 2.12 (dd, IH), 2.59 (d, IH), 2.75 (d, IH), 3.11 (m, IH), 3.47 (q, 2H), 3.80 (d, IH), 4.17 (s, IH), 7.32 (m, 5H).
