EXAMPLE 4 105 g of 1,4-dihydroxy-2,3-dicyanonaphthalene, 145 g of potassium carbonate and 500 ml of DMF were introduced as the initial charge. 155 g of 4-bromobutane were added. The batch was then heated to 100° C. with stirring and subsequently stirred at that temperature for 6 hours. Thereafter the reaction mixture was cooled down and poured into 2000 ml of ice-water. The precipitate was filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried at 60° C. under reduced pressure to leave 120 g of 1,4-dibutoxy-2,3-dicyanonaphthalene (theory: 90%; melting point: 69°-70° C.).
