In a 250 mL round-bottom flask, add 35 g (0.45 mol) of DMF and 45 mL of methanol. Add a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to the reaction mixture. The amount of H2SO4 required may vary depending on the reaction conditions, but typically ranges from 0.5% to 2% by weight of DMF. Stir the reaction mixture at room temperature or under reflux for several hours (typically 6-12 hours).
