Is Argireline better than retinol?
Jun 12,2024
It's not so much that one is necessarily better than the other; rather, they just work differently and have slightly different effects. Argireline helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. Retinol, on the other hand, is a form of vitamin A known for its ability to promote skin cell turnover, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Argireline
Argireline, a synthetic peptide, also known as acetyl hexapeptide-3 or acetyl hexapeptide-8 as having properties similar to botulinum, is a peptide patented by the Barcelona-based research laboratory Lipotec[1]. It has the effect of Botox but without the risk of direct injection. When applied to specific areas of the face, Argireline inhibits the reactions that cause muscles to move or contract, hence reducing the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. It is said that those effects are more short-term, while in the long-term, they can also help stimulate collagen production over time[2].
It was provided to 10 healthy females in an oil/water emulsion that contained 10% Argireline. Silicone imprints were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy, and further assessments with a 10x magnifying glass were conducted. Argireline reduced wrinkle depth by up to 30% after four weeks of treatment without exhibiting toxicity, while the oil/water emulsion reduced wrinkle depth by up to 10%. Argireline was deemed a non-toxic anti-wrinkle peptide, a biosafe alternative to botulinum neurotoxins, albeit with a lower efficacy[3].
Retinol
Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is added to skin creams, lotions and serums. It has antiaging effects and can help clear acne. Products containing retinol are widely available over the counter, and stronger concentrations of retinoids are available by prescription.
Retinol increases skin cell production (proliferation). It helps unclog pores. Retinol also exfoliates your skin and increases collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and giving your skin a fresher, plump appearance.

Argireline is made up of chains of amino acids. Such chains can affect how our cells work, e.g. relaxing our face muscles. It is derived from the peptide Acetyl hexapeptide-3, a substrate of Botulinum toxin, or more commonly known as Botox.

Most of us know that Argireline prevents the formation of expression wrinkles by somehow inhibiting muscle movement. For this reason, it is sometimes called Botox in a jar. But, in fact, they work very differently.
