Applications and Synthesis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF, CAS 67-47-0), which is derived from sugars, is the link between biomass and furan-based chemicals. With its various functional groups and associated reaction sites, 5-HMF opens the door to a wide range of chemical modifications, making it a versatile, renewable building block. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been widely recognized as a key intermediate in the production of biomass derived fuels and polymers. Its synthesis is based on the acid catalyzed dehydration of sugars, mainly hexoses, which is highly non-selective when taking place in aqueous media.
Applications
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a biomass-derived platform chemical, which can be produced from carbohydrates. In the past decades, 5- HMF has received tremendous attention because of its wide applications in the production of various value-added chemicals, materials and biofuels.
5-HMF serves as building block for many applications in several industries like packaging, construction, textile, cosmetics, food and health as:
Formaldehyde replacement in resins, adhesives and coatings
Precursor of FDCA (Furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid) and its polymer PEF (Polyethylene furanoate)
Active natural ingredient in nutraceuticals and dietary foods
Synthesis Method
1 g of polyphenylene sulfide sulfone is placed in a mixture of 2 ml of chlorosulfonic acid and 10 m of 1.2-dichloroethane, and added at 40 ° C in an oil bath. Heat 5h; then wash the product to neutral with deionized water and absolute ethanol, vacuum drying at 60 ° C for 12h, to obtain sulfonated polyphenylene sulfide sulfone with a degree of sulfonation of 14.36%;0.18g of fructose was dissolved in 20ml of DMSO, and the fructose was fully dispersed at room temperature and transferred to the reactor;Further, 0.09 g of the spssf catalyst was charged into the reactor and reacted at 90 ° C for 80 min to obtain 5-HMF. The content of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was measured by high performance liquid chromatography, and the yield of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was 100%.
