Cortistatin 17, human, is a cyclic peptide composed of 17 amino acids, exhibiting structural similarity to somatostatin. Cortistatin 17 binds to all somatostatin receptor subtypes (SSTR) in a similar manner to rat corticostatin. Its inhibitory effect on cAMP production stimulated by hirsutin in Chinese hamster ovarian cells expressing SSTR2-5 is dose-dependent, but slightly lower than the effect of somatostatin 14. Like rat corticostatin, Cortistatin 17, human has an impact on sleep and wakefulness patterns in rats. Cortistatin 17, human reduces mild slow wave sleep (SWS1) and increases deep slow wave sleep (SWS2) in a dose-dependent manner. The use of Cortistatin 17 and human resulted in temporary flattening of cortical and hippocampal electroencephalograms.
