Transferrin fragment acetate is a major iron binding protein in animal serum, with iron binding sites and properties similar to lactoferrin. Human transferrin is a single chain glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 80000. The molecule has two similar structural domains, each containing a metal binding site. Although the structure of the ligand is similar to 2,3, there are many differences in the characteristics of the sites 4,5. Analysis of sequence homology 6 between two structural domains and tissue internal homology 7 of transferrin gene revealed that the original gene of transferrin precursor protein replicated and fused, forming transferrin.
