2-Hydroxy-2-Methylpromanoic acid, also known as 2-Hydroxy-2-methylpropionic acid (CAS 594-61-6), is a chelating agent that is commonly used to improve the separation of lanthanides and actinides by liquid chromatography.
It can form complexes with Eu(III), and has been studied by time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. 2-Hydroxy-2-Methylpromanoic acid is often used to synthesise nanocrystalline β-NiMoO4 at room temperature, or as a reagent to prepare fully functionalised tetronic acids, or bioisosteres of trimethadione, N-derivative-1,2,3-oxathiazolidine-4-one-2,2-dioxides from a-hydroxyamide
As a background electrolyte, it can be used to separate and detect metal ions, by on-line cyclic voltammetry.
