2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide containing 7 glucopyranose units, with an average of one hydroxypropyl group per unit. The circular arrangement of the glucose units forms a torus-shaped ring configuration, and CH2 groups and ether linkages of the molecule face the hollow interior of the configuration, which leads to a nonpolar cavity and a polar exterior. When a compound with appropriate geometry and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin are in the same solution, the nonpolar aromatic parts of that compound tend to interact with the nonpolar interior of the 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin molecule. This complexation isolates the aromatic parts of that compound from the water, thereby increasing its aqueous solubility. 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin has been widely used in improving the aqueous solubility of a variety of compounds, especially those containing a phenyl group, a group encompassing many drugs.?
