With sodium hydroxide; dihydrogen peroxide; In tetrahydrofuran; water; | A mixture of [36838-71-8]4-methylenetetrahydropyran (Chem. Abstr. 59 , 13970a 1963,) (3.4 g) in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) is added dropwise under argon at -78 to a stirring solution of 0.5 M 9-borabicyclo [3.3.1]-nonane in tetrahydrofuran (69.3 ml). It is stirred 3 hours at 0, treated with water (10 ml), raised to room temperature and treated dropwise with 3M aqueous sodium hydroxide (12 ml) followed by 30% hydrogen peroxide slowly added to maintain a temperature below 40. After 1 hour, the mixture is extracted with ether, the extract is dried over sodium sulphate, the ether evaporated and the residue distilled to remove material boiling under 100 at atmospheric pressure. The residual oil is chromatographed over silica gel with ethyl acetate-hexane as eluent (1:1, later 2:1) to obtain pure tetrahydropyran-4-ylmethanol. |
