REVIEW Esterase-catalysed hydrolysis of dabigatran etexilate in the plasma and liver yields the active form, dabigatran. Dabigatran competitively and reversibly binds to thrombin thereby inhibiting its ability to convert fibrinogen to fibrin during the coagulation cascade.
