Synthomycin also known as racemic mixture chloramphenicol. It tastes bitter. The melting point was 148-151 ℃. No optical rotation. "It is readily soluble in ethanol, acetone or ethyl acetate, and poorly soluble in water." It is prepared by chemical synthesis of 1-nitrophenyl-2-amino-1, 3-propylene glycol. The antimicrobial spectrum, action and use are the same as chloramphenicol.
