Polyquaternium salt (English name: Polyquaternium) is an international cosmetic ingredient name of polycationic polymer used in personal care industry. At least 40 different polyquaternary ammonium salt polymers have been approved by INCI. The difference between different polymers is the value after the word "poly quaternary ammonium salt". For example, Polyquaternium-5, polyquaternium-7 and polyquaternium-47 are all chemically different types of polymers. Numbers are assigned in the order of registration, not because of their chemical structure. Polyquaternium salt is especially suitable for hair conditioner, shampoo, mousse, hair spray, hair dye and contact lens solution. Because they are positively charged, they can neutralize the negative charge of most shampoos and hair proteins, helping to make hair soft. Their positive charge also bonds their ions to hair and skin. Some have antibacterial properties
