  2-Methylimidazole is an organic compound that is structurally related to imidazole with the chemical formula CH3C3H2N2H. It is a white or colorless solid that is highly soluble in polar organic solvents. It is a precursor to a range of drugs and is a ligand in coordination chemistry.

2, using ethylenediamine and acetonitrile as raw materials, the reaction is carried out in the presence of sulfur to generate imidazoline, and then in the presence of nickel catalyst, dehydrogenation at 200℃, 2-methylimidazole can be prepared. 

3, can be prepared by the reaction of glyoxal and methylamine in the presence of formaldehyde.
