1,2-Pentanediol is a multifunctional and widely used cosmetic raw material. In additionto the excellent moisturizing properties of diols, 1,2-pentanediol has antimicrobial andsolubilizing properties. 1,2-Pentanediol also enhances the water resistance of sunscreenformulations. 1,2-Pentanediol also contributes to the appearance of emulsions whenused in emulsion formulations and has a favorable skin feel.
1,2-Pentanediol can be used in a wide variety of skin care products, especially forsensitive skin, delicate skin such as infants and young children, and aged and dry skin, aswell as in a variety of hair care products. 1,2-Pentanediol for personal care products is ofhigh purity, colorless, odorless and free of irritating impurities.
4、Applications
1,2-Pentanediol is an excellent skin humectant with good moisturizing properties andenhances the water resistance of sunscreens. A good emulsifier adjuvant that reducesthe particle size of emulsions. It has good anti-microbial properties on its own andexcellent synergistic effects when used in combination with other glycols andpreservatives, thus it can replace the traditional preservatives.
Recommended additive level: 3% to 6%.
4.1 Humectants
1,2-Pentanediol contains two hydroxyl groups, so it has the function of moisturizing, andthe moisturizing function is better than other diols. Patent W01995/001151 reported1,2-pentanediol as a cosmetic moisturizing active substance, the dosage in the range of2% to 5% has a good skin moisturizing effect.
Clinical trials showed that formulations containing 5% 1,2-pentanediol increased skinwater content by about 30% compared to placebo.
In another study clinically comparing the skin moisturizing properties of 1,2-pentanedioland propylene glycol, two o/w lotion formulations, one containing 5% 1,2-pentanedioland the other containing 5% propylene glycol, showed that the formulation containing1,2-pentanediol resulted in an increase in the skin's water content of close to 90%compared to the propylene glycol-containing formulation.
Patent EP1078638 describes in detail that 1,2-pentanediol improves the water resistanceof sunscreen formulations. It has been demonstrated that formulations containing1,2-pentanediol have better water resistance than formulations containing propyleneglycol and 1,2-hexanediol.
4.2 Antimicrobial Agent
1,2-Pentanediol has excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, it has a goodinhibitory effect on Gram-positive and negative bacteria, yeasts, molds, and it does notbelong to the category of preservatives, so if it is used alone it is claimed that it can bepreservative-free.
It has good synergy with other commonly used preservatives and can also be used as apreservative additive to reduce the dosage of traditional preservatives and reduce theirritation caused by preservatives.
The MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) value of 1,2-pentanediol is significantlylower than that of other diols, indicating that 1,2-pentanediol has high antibacterialactivity. 1,2-pentanediol has a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect against Gram-negativeand Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts and molds.
Experiments show that the antimicrobial ability of 1,2-pentanediol mixed with less otherpreservatives can greatly enhance the preservative efficacy of preservatives, and thispromotion effect of 1,2-pentanediol is significantly better than that of 1,3-butanediol.
1,2-pentanediol has an antimicrobial effect on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonasaeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and marine fungi, and the use of 3.2% can inhibitthe microbial growth, improve the antimicrobial ability, reduce the amount ofpreservatives and make the product safer and gentler.
4.3 Solubilizers
Cosmetic emulsion formulations are usually composed of two incompatible liquid phasecomponents: one is a continuous phase, while the other phase is dispersed in the formof small droplets. The particle size of the emulsion and its distribution is a key parameterfor cosmetic formulations. A homogeneous, fine and well-distributed emulsion particlesize system will be more stable and less prone to accumulation, with good spreadingproperties and a more delicate appearance.
Since 1,2-pentanediol contains both hydrophilic and lipophilic groups, it is soluble inboth water and many oils and fats, so it can be used as a solvent for many cosmeticingredients.
In serums it helps to enhance the transparency of the system, while its uniqueamphoteric structure makes it very permeable to the skin, thus helping the activeingredient to enter the stratum corneum of the skin and improving the utilization of theactive ingredient.
When preparing emulsions, the use of 1,2-pentanediol in formulations at 1% to 5%dosage levels significantly improves the organoleptic characteristics and skin feel of theproduct. The emulsion particle size of formulations containing 1% 1,2-pentanediol wassignificantly smaller than that of formulations without 1,2-pentanediol. Formulationscontaining 3% and 5% 1,2-pentanediol have even smaller particle sizes than thosewithout 1,2-pentanediol, and the emulsions are less viscous than those with otherpolyols.
1,2-pentanediol also enhances the dispersibility of powders, which can result in whiterand more lustrous products when used in skin care or sun care cosmetics.
