Hazard Information | Back Directory | [Description]
β-Mangostin is a xanthone originally isolated from G. mangostana with diverse biological activites.1,2,3,4,5,6 It inhibits growth of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA; MICs = 6.25-12.5 and 6.25-25 μg/ml, respectively), P. falciparum (IC50 = 3 μg/ml), and M. tuberculosis (MIC = 6.25 μg/ml).1,2,3 β-Mangostin inhibits fatty acid synthase (FASN) with an IC50 value of 24.83 μM.4 It induces cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and intrinsic and mitochondrial apoptosis in MCF-7 breast cancer cells.5 β-Mangostin also inhibits LPS-induced nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2; Item No. 14010) production in RAW264.7 cells and reduces neutrophil infiltration and TNF-α and IL-1β production in a mouse model of carrageenan-induced peritonitis.6 | [Uses]
β-Mangostin is isolated from the stem bark of Garcinia mangostana L. which shows significant cytotoxicities and anti-inflammatory activities against the LPS-induced RAW cell 264.7. Also, it demonstrates anti-metastatic activity against human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, which may act as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of HCC. | [Definition]
ChEBI: Beta-Mangostin is a member of xanthones. |
