2-octyl cyanoacrylate is one of the most commonly used, commercially available wound adhesives. It received initial approval in 1998 as an alternative to closure of skin wounds with 5-0 or smaller sutures, staples, or adhesive strips by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. | [Indications]
2-Octyl cyanoacrylate (Dermabond) is a fast-setting topical skin adhesive intended
to close easily approximated skin edges of wounds from surgical incisions, including
punctures from minimally invasive surgery and simple, thoroughly cleansed,
trauma-induced lacerations. It may be used in conjunction with, but not in place
of, subcuticular sutures. It is contraindicated for use on any wounds with evidence
of active infection, areas under high skin tension, mucocutaneous surfaces, or skin
regularly exposed to body fluids. Patients with formaldehyde allergies may react to
this topical solution. | [References]
